Washington, DC, Police Chief Pamela Smith signed an executive order Thursday allowing DC police officers to share information about people not in their custody with federal immigration enforcement agencies such as ICE — as President Donald Trump continues his federal takeover of law enforcement in the nation’s capital and crackdown on illegal immigration.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will now be able to assist federal agents with immigration enforcement in the District of Columbia, according to a memo issued days after President Trump authorized the deployment of the National Guard to help tackle crime in the nation’s capital.

DC police chief authorizes sharing information with immigration agencies during traffic stops but prohibits arrests based solely on federal immigration warrants.
