On Linux, any file or directory that begins with a dot (.) is by default hidden. These often hold configuration settings. To view them, I use: ls -la This shows all the hidden files in a directory.
For example, to name all the pieces of your original file bigfile.xaa, bigfile.xab and so on, you would add your prefix to the end of your split command like so: $ split –-verbose bigfile bigfile.
